The Renewable Natural Gas Incentive Act of 2023, H.R. 2448, was introduced on March 30, 2023. This bill proposes to establish a $1/gallon tax credit for the use of renewable natural gas in vehicles. The organization Natural Gas Vehicles for America is circulating a letter of support for the bill and has requested that SWANA sign the letter and encourage SWANA members to share with their respective organizations. The letter will be open for signatures until the end of November.
Renewable Natural Gas Incentive Act Overview
The Renewable Natural Gas Incentive Act proposes to amend the Internal Revenue Code to promote the increased use of renewable natural gas by allowing a tax credit equal to $1 times each gallon of renewable natural gas (RNG) used as a fuel in a motor vehicle, motorboat, or in aviation. This credit is modeled after the Alternative Fuels Tax Credit (6426 (d)). In this bill, renewable natural gas is defined as compressed or liquefied gas derived from biomass. Biogas for RNG often originates at landfills and anaerobic digestors. More information on renewable natural gas can be found at: https://www.epa.gov/lmop/renewable-natural-gas.
