Staying Safe on Unpredictable Roads
As we anticipate the upcoming weather throughout Indiana, especially in the southern counties which are not used to it, we need to prepare for sudden cold snaps accompanied by snow, ice, slush freezing rain and reduced visibility. Power outages can make traffic areas treacherous. These rapid changes can turn routine drives into hazardous situations with little warning.
Why is Winter Driving Risky?
Winter weather reduces tire traction, increases stopping distance and limits visibility. Even experienced drivers can be caught off guard when road conditions change quickly. Slippery surfaces, black ice, blowing snow, and freezing rain all increase the risk of collisions. Mild days followed by overnight freezes are especially dangerous, as water on roadways can quickly turn into invisible ice. Power outages can cause traffic light outages, requiring them to be treated as 4-way stops.
Prepare Your Vehicle
- Ensure tires are in good condition and properly inflated.
- Check fluids (antifreeze, windshield washer, oil, and gasoline).
- Confirm your battery is in good condition.
- Clear windows, mirrors, lights and roof of snow, ice, or condensation.
- Keep an emergency kit with blankets, flashlights, snacks, water, and first-aid kit.
Stay Informed
- Check the forecast before traveling
- Plan extra travel time.
- Delay trips or choose alternate routes if conditions are poor.
- Use a reliable weather app for real-time updates.
- Communicate with drivers in areas with power outages, down lines or trees.
If You Become Stranded
- Stay in your vehicle and call for help.
- Conserve fuel by running the engine when only as needed.
- Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow or debris.
- Use hazard lights to remain visible.
Final Reminder
Winter driving safety is about preparation, patience, and smart decision-making. Hazards affect every region, whether its snow-covered roads, ice, rain, and fog. Take your time, plan ahead, and adjust your driving to the conditions. Every trip, every time!
Your safety, and the safety of those around you, depends on it
