SWANA Statement on Product Safety

SWANA has issued a statement emphasizing the urgent need for safer product design and responsible end-of-life management to address the growing threat of fires and explosions in the waste and resource management industry. The SWANA Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Technical Division Advocacy Committee has been discussing the safety issue of the many products that are causing explosions and fires in vehicles and at facilities. The committee recommended that SWANA take the lead in strengthening awareness of this issue and the need for improved product design, labeling, and responsible end of life management. Working with the committee, SWANA prepared the linked statement, which describes the issue and invites producers, policy makers, and other stakeholders to join us in finding solutions.
The next step is to use this statement as a baseline for an op-ed, articles, and a call to action. SWANA is asking other organizations to join in this effort. Other organizations, including NSAC, NAHMMA, NWRA, and ReMA have expressed interest, and others will be invited.
